OBY had a load of fun on Friday night at the Amazing Race...
32 people came along, swapped shoes and hit the road.
We climbed the muddy hills, drunk the poo ponds water (?), and had a great time at laserstrike.
Supper was back at the Youth Centre, before heading for home.
Next GO is the movie Madagascar on Friday 22, and before that come along to Sprout on Friday night (15 August) in the Youth Centre, from 7pm.

Altar Worship Night

Hey everyone... Altar Worship Night is on this Saturday 7pm at North-West New Life (La Vida Conference Centre, Hansens Lane, Riccarton).

It's a citywide youth event that's main purpose is to worship God! It's going to be awesum.

"On the 18th of August 2007, hundreds of young people from different churches all over Christchurch will converge for Altar '07, one night of worship, for our God. There will be corporate worship, performance music, painting, multimedia, dance and reflection; everything to give glory to the Lord.

On that night, we will not be defined by our churches' denominations, we will not be divided by minor differences in theology, or the type of service we attend. Instead, the youth of Christchurch will be united with one cause, to lift up the name of Jesus across our city and give thanks to our God for all that He is and all that He has done.

This event is for all the young people of Christchurch, and will happen only through the support of the young people of Christchurch. The band will be made up of musicians from different churches and youth ministries, and the dance crews and other artists will be a representation of all the awesome gifts and talents God has given people all over the city.

Start spreading the word, altar '07 is the start of something awesome in our city!"

Hanmer Weekend – 6-8th July
Yeeyip, OBY are off to Hanmer for the weekend. Ahhh hot pools, mountain biking, mini-golf, hanging out, devotions, top quality times… Meet 7pm tonight at church.

Koru dates coming up…
Note there is no Koru on 6th July cas we are going to Hanmer.

We are giving away 10 free tickets to Koru kids to come to the Mid-winter Christmas Dinner (first in first served).

The next Koru is 20th July – we are going to QE2 for a swim & slide. It will only cost $2.50 and the hydroslide is free (yip for the leaders as well!). Will be great nite.

Mid-Winter Christmas Dinner
The annual Mid-Winter Christmas Dinner is coming up on Friday 13th July. It’s going to be a great night out! 3 course meal… snow…. Christmas decorations… good food… good company!

Tickets cost $15 adult or $8 child (13 & under) or $40 Family (2 adults & 2 children). Buy tickets after service at church or from church office. Limited seats – note it sold out last year!!

OBY DVD Nite
The next OBY DVD nite is on Sat 28th July @ 7pm. Cruise down to the youth centre to chill out, watch a DVD. Bring some food to share. No cost. Warwick is organising.

Happy New Year!!!

Hope you are having awesum holidays & enjoying the summer (when the sun comes out anyway!)

It feels like ages since youthgroup finished last year aye… so will be good to get together again. We’ll crank up the year with a BBQ & Beach Nite on Wednesday 31^st Jan – meet @ 6pm youth centre. Bring along some food/drink to share, & any sports equipment or games you want. Good chance to invite a friend along to yg. The following Wednesday 7^th Feb we’ll be back in the youth centre.

Digestion is running BBQ’s in January (21^st Jan @ Curries House Ave, 27^th Jan @ Taylor’s). Digestion starts back officially on Feb 4.

OBY Camp 2006

OBY Youth Camp 2006 is just round the corner! Only 2 1/2 weeks away!!! 20-22 October (Labour Weekend).

Camp is going to be awesum. We are off to Mt Hutt Retreat, in Methven. It's a top venue.

There will be heaps of fun things to do over the weekend... like spotlight, bonfire, mountain biking, sitting in the spa/sauna, team challenges, touch rugby, argo rides, archery...

Christoph Zintl (youth pastor @ South City Christian Centre) is coming to talk with us over the weekend about how we can better connect with each other and with our Creator God!!! Christoph is a top guy and has great "speaking skills"... you'll love him.

We'd LOVE you to make it! So please get a rego from church or Amy if you haven't already got one. It only costs $65 (or $60 if you pay by this Sunday night). Give regos & money to Kate Diggs. If you have trouble with paying, please talk to Kate - some sponsorship is available! Don't let money stop you from coming.

Yes we are off to find some snow... and play in it! Snow fights, taboggen rides, rolling down the hill... will be awesum.

We are off to 0800 Hungry to open boxes, pack food or whatever (it's all easy stuff your baby sister could do & it's kinda fun doing it).

This is an excellent opportunity for you to come along and build your faith & knowledge of God and what being a Christian is all about. This is also a great chance to ask a friend who may be searching about God and is keen to find out more.

A typical nite would involve: meet together for a (free) meal, ice-breaker game, presentation, small group discussion.

There may be a day or weekend away... more details to come.

Who: You, your mates... anyone who is aged 12-20 years. This is a great chance to invite someone who is searching about God or wondering what being a Christian is all about.

A Licence for Freedom!

Do you remember that feeling of utter liberation when you passed your restricted license? (ok well some of you will!) Everything, and I mean everything, was riding on that test. Personally, when I heard those magical words, “you’ve passed”, I felt euphoric. I still recall blasting the old-school tune, “Don’t Worry Be Happy”, from the tinny speakers of my blue Mazda 323 as I fanged back to college, windows down and a smile a mile wide. I could have been soaring like an eagle, or bounding from mountain top to mountain top for all I knew. What a feeling!

As much as automobile freedom comes from a restricted license, we all know that there are a few rules that accompany the piece of paper. Namely, no passengers. But in my delirious state, I disregarded that rule on day one. Imagine my horror when I saw mum pass by in her car as I drove home from college, my Mazda full of mates on the way to the beach. She was not impressed.

Kinda like a restricted license, God has given us incredible freedom. He sent His Son to die so that we could have the ultimate freedom from all the junk that we do.

I’ve come to realise in recent years that Jesus wasn’t kidding when He said he wanted us to have life, and life to its absolute maximum. In reality, all that stuff that tries to distract us, all these “rules” that people think are associated with Jesus, are simply a result of His desire for us to have a rocking, cranking life. So we should not only enjoy the incredible freedom that we have in Jesus, but pursue a life that honours Him. A life lived to its fullness.

Paul writes in Romans, “You are dead to sin and alive to God. That’s what Jesus did.” (Romans 6:13, The Message). That means you must not give sin a vote in the way you conduct your lives. Don’t give it the time of day. Don’t even run little errands that are connected with that old way of life. Throw yourselves wholeheartedly and full-time — remember, you’ve been raised from the dead! — into God’s way of doing things. Sin can’t tell you how to live. After all, you’re not living under that old tyranny any longer. You’re living in the freedom of God.

Koru #2

Tonight was the 2nd Koru programme. It went really well. No broken teeth, or trips to the hospital ;)

We doubled in numbers! There were 8 young people in total plus the koru team. 1 new boy & 3 new girls.

I asked the 3 new girls (who I know from Holiday programme) how they knew Koru was happening as they don't go to Waltham School... and they said they saw the sandwich boards that I had put out there today! Wohoo. Go the sandwich boards :) Plus one had got a flyer at the Waltham Fun Fair - so well done to everyone who helped out with the info stall!!

Steve did a wee talk tonight about Friendship, and best friends. He shared how it's cool to have best friends but even our best friends can let us down sometimes... but Jesus will never let us down. He is the ultimate best friend who loves us heaps. Was really cool.

Well done all the leaders & helpers who turned up tonight. Was real cool to see ya there doing your thing.

So the next Koru programme is on 2nd June. We asked the kids if they wanted to cruise over to the Quiz Nite that's happening at church. They were all keen so we are going to meet at 6:30pm that night for fish n chips, and then cruise over to the Quiz Nite.

Hey I'm not sure how many have checked out the link on the side bar "SOUL PURPOSE" but if you haven't... you should! It's a real cool site aye. They publish a magazine specifically for young people in NZ for free. You can ask for a free copy, otherwise just read online.

It's got heaps of cool stuff about music, life, faith, current events....

"I used to think that Christians had it sweet. From what I saw they were never angry, sad, confused or lost. I thought they were sort of super-human, never actually feeling the normal emotions that everyone else let consume them. Like energizer bunnies on party-pills they were always happy happy happy.

After becoming a Christian myself, I tried to take on this persona that I had seen. I had been saved, and now got to hang out with the Creator of the Universe! Man, did it get any better? I started on this awesome journey, adamant that I would follow Jesus with all my heart and never sin again. One slip up after another, I came to realize that this wasn’t going to happen. The glow of salvation was starting to wear off and I was back in the world, totally disheartened that I couldn’t just stop sinning. I was definitely a child of God, so why couldn’t I get it right?

Eventually I grew tired. The cycle of sinning, and then begging for forgiveness, sinning again, and going back to the start, had worn me down. I had no one to blame but myself. But further than this, it has all been paid for. Every one of our sins, past, present and future, were fully counted for by Jesus Christ when he died on the Cross. At the point of accepting Him into our lives we accept this forgiveness for every sin we have done and will do in the future. We are no longer focused on begging always for forgiveness. Instead now we thank God for the amazing love that was poured out on the Cross and in the knowledge that we are still sinners, ask God for his help to become more like Christ. This does not warrant us to go out and sin, but instead compels us to obey out of love for what Jesus has already done." by Kimberley V

You can go check it out for yourself on Friday night - starts at 7:30pm at Westpac Centre.

Otherwise we are going together on Saturday night for the youth night Amplify! Yeeyah. As Mike said at Eastercamp this is a fantastic opportunity to bring a friend to hear the gospel, what being a Christian is all about. If everyone at eastercamp bought 2 friends... there'd be about 9000 there!! Satellite are playing @ 7pm & there's a few other cool bands. So meet at church at 6:30pm sharp... we will leave pretty promptly to get good seats!

On Sunday night we're also doing sumthing a bit different... come along between 5pm-5:30pm bring some food to share, we are going to have tea together and then cruise on a couple of buses to the Greg Laurie event at 6:30pm. This is also a great chance to bring someone along!

Koru is the name of the Intermediate Programme starting up on 5 May, run by OBY.

It will be run on the 1st and 3rd Friday of the month from 7pm to 9pm.

This is a great chance for you to get involved, serve those younger than you, develop in your leadership skills and serving qualities.

If you are keen to get involved as a leader or helper, come along to a meeting this Friday at 7:30pm in the youth centre.

This service is open for anyone to come along to.

We (OBY) are then going to go through the amazing Easter Journey together. You will hardly recognise the church! They've already had hundreds of people go through from all over Christchurch.

We'll be finished a bit earlier tonight (about 8pm) so you can go home & pack for camp.

Father, I thank you for this wonderful provision of this youth camp. I pray that you will protect all the young people and youth leaders participating - both their physical well-being and their belongings.

May this time at camp be a special time to time to grow in their relationships with each other, and most importantly, may their relationship with you deepen as they draw closer to you.

Please prepare their hearts to receive the message you have for them.

Lord, I pray for the youth leaders and camp parents, that they will relate well to the youth and be available and equipped to offer your love and wisdom as it is needed. May they be able to maintain the right balance of time with the youth and also time to recharge forthemselves.

I pray for those from our church involved in security and also rubbish collection - tasks that are not always appreciated. Please equip them to serve well in these areas. I pray for the catering team - Alastair and Annette and their helpers. May all the required equipment work reliably and all the supplies arrive on time and in the right quantities.

Thank you for Amy and her team of leaders and the work they have done preparing for Easter camp. May they also be encouraged as they see You working in the hearts of the young people Father, please pour out your blessings on the group from OBY as they head out to Spencer Park on Thursday.

May the setup go smoothly and everyone arrive there safely. In the precious name of Jesus I pray. Amen

Well done everyone who helped out at the Waltham Community Urban Fair on Friday... Anna, Andrew, Mark, Scottie, Karen, Jess, Eulita, Eulalia, Jasmine, Aliesha! You guys all did soooo well. It was pretty cold, so good effort.

All 200 sausages & Andrew's coconut ice were sold! Still got a bit of stock (chocolate, chips, cans & cookies)...

So far we have made about $85... so hopefully if we sell the rest of our stock, we would have made about $180 in total!

We will divide up the money before Eastercamp.

Last Wednesday we talked about faith that does things is alive (whereas faith that doesn't do things is dead!)... so Eastercamp is holding a challenge for all youthgroups to come up with something creative to sell on Trade Me. Something that would raise a bit of dough, so we can then donate to a nominated charity.

Have a think about what we could "sell" and bring your idea on Wednesday night! (This could be your labour, something you've made, an old toy, something you don't need...)

Pilgrimage Practices

Tonight at Digestion we started the theme of Pilgrimage, thinking about our journey with God and going to Eastercamp.

Here are 3 ways you can practice pilgrimage over the next 5 weeks!

1. Go for a walk each day for the next 5 weeks. As you walk, pray the same pilgrim prayer. See what you learn.

God be with me in every pass
Jesus be with me on every hill
Spirit be with me in every stream
Each step of the journey I goest

2. Go to Easter camp.

3. Do an internet pilgrimage. Go to http://www.labyrinth.org.uk twice a week for the next 6 weeks.

This is a great chance for you to invite your friends especially those who don't know God. Think about someone who you could invite...

Did you know you can register online?? Go to www.eastercamp.org.nz. You don't even need to have a credit card - you can do it by online banking. Pretty cool aye! Otherwise you can give to Amy to send in.

Bouncy Boxing here we come...

It's official... we are having Bouncy Boxing this Saturday at Spencer Park!!!

For those who don't know what Bouncy Boxing is... you jump around in a big bouncy castle, put on massive gloves that are wwwaaaaaaay too big for your wee hands, then try and lift them high enough to knock down your opponent! Sound fun?! It is.

If that's not your thing, that's cool. They'll be sports to play, grass to sit on, a playround to play on and of course a good old bbq to eat from ;)

We'll then cruise to Rands & Kates for sum dessert.

Meet at 3:30pm at church with $5. Good chance to bring a mate along to join in on the fun!
